Fault-based Analysis

The intention of this module is to help understand which faults are triggered by nearby blasting and to quantify the hazard associated with each fault on excavations. Understanding and quantifying the role of structures on your seismicity is critical in assessing your current seismic risk, and the risk with future excavations near active faults. The app may also be useful to determine which structures should be included explicitly in numerical modelling and measured for calibration, as numerical models should reflect the seismic behaviour that is observed on key structures.

Key Features

  • Find the faults that trigger the most seismicity from blasting and where on the fault is most productive
  • Compute seismic hazard from fault sources, isolate contribution of each fault on overall seismic hazard
  • Find the highest hazard fault affecting each excavation
  • Rank faults in three ways:
    1. The amount of seismicity that is generated by nearby blasting
    2. The likelihood of a large event on a fault
    3. The likelihood of a strong ground motion due to seismicity on the fault

Supported Data Types

Compare faults based on how much seismicity is generated by nearby blasting

Find which parts of a fault are most productive

Calculate seismic hazard from fault sources

Rank fault based on their seismic hazard as a source or as they affect excavations
